Money Matters

SPACE [Sample]

We all use money, but have you ever stopped to think about how it actually works?

Introduction

Money is a multifaceted concept with several key functions in an economy. It basically boils down to a system of value that facilitates the

exchange of goods and services.

Imagine trying to buy a boerewors roll with a bag of mangoes. Barter

systems, where you trade goods directly, were all the rage back in the day.

But things get tricky when someone wants a cellphone instead of your mangoes. That is where money comes in. It is like a common language that lets you easily value and exchange

anything, from a cool cap to a fancy car.

The Three Faces of Money

1. Medium of Exchange: Money eliminates the need for bartering, where goods were directly exchanged for other goods. It acts as a common denominator, allowing easy comparison and exchange of different products and services.

This means you do not have to swap a surfboard for a TV - you can simply use rands to buy both. Easy peasy!

2. Unit of Account: Money provides a standardized way to measure and express value. Prices are quoted in terms of money units, making it easier to understand the cost of things.

Just like you would not measure distance with pineapples, rands tell you exactly how much something costs. No more confusion about whether a new rugby jersey is worth three chickens or a whole goat!

3. Store of Value: Money's value holds relatively stable over time, allowing you to save and purchase things later. This encourages economic activity and long-term investment. Unlike a half-eaten bunny chow, rands hold their value over time.

Mzansi's Money Machine

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB)

is the main character in our money story.

The SARB does not just fire up a

giant money printing machine. Here is what they actually do: Setting the Interest Rate: This controls borrowing costs. A lower rate encourages people and businesses to borrow, which can boost the economy, but also lead to inflation (rising prices). The SARB uses interest rates to balance these forces. Open Market Operations: The SARB buys and sells government bonds. Buying bonds injects money into the economy, while selling them takes money out. This helps manage inflation and economic stability. Banking Reserves: The SARB sets the minimum amount of cash banks must hold. This helps ensure banks have enough money to cover customer withdrawals and keeps the financial system running smoothly.

Banking Business

Banks are the backbone of the financial system. They accept your deposits, offer

loans and other financial products, and facilitate everyday transactions.

Think of them as financial supermarkets where you can save, borrow, and

manage your money. Here is how they play the game: Current & Savings Accounts: These are your virtual bank bags to store your cash for everyday spending and saving for future goals. Access (current) or future needs (savings). Savings accounts often earn a bit of interest, like the reward for being a responsible braai guest! Loans & Credit Cards: Need extra coals to get that fire going? Loans are like borrowing briquettes from your braai buddy, with interest as the repayment fee. Credit cards offer a short-term advance, but be careful not to overspend - that is like burning all the charcoal at once! Investments: Banks can also help you invest your money in stocks, bonds, or unit trusts to grow your wealth over time. Alternatively, you can venture into other forms of investments, such as: Stokvels; Tax Free Savings Account(TFSA); or invest in JSE Stocks.

The Crypto Conundrum

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are a

completely new way of using money.

They are digital currencies that exist

outside the traditional banking system. Here is a quick breakdown: Decentralized: Unlike rands controlled by the SARB, cryptocurrencies are not controlled by any one entity. Secure: Cryptocurrencies use blockchain technology, a secure digital ledger, to track transactions. Volatile: The value of cryptocurrencies can fluctuate wildly, making them a risky investment.
